Dapper
Dapper was a female English setter that my father bought for me, after the incident with Murphy.
Dapper was a good hunting dog and I was able to train her to stay with me and work with me as a team. Now if only I could honor her and her efforts as a hunter by being a good shot. Big game I am good sitting squirrels I am good, rabbits on the ground I am good... What Dapper wanted was the birds in the air, I wasn't so good.
About the last time that we went out hunting for Cockbirds the gun missfired I was pointing the gun to the ground, something that I analyzed as the safest place to point a gun... So I advocate keeping the barrel pointed down and in front of the hunter and not to shoulder your piece. The gun comes up to the shoulder faster and you are always looking at what you are aiming at. No mistakes or accidents. See clearly where you are shooting and make sure that you are safe and also those around you are safe. The gun miss fired and I went to unlock the bolt and then the gun fired. What a surprise and a pain in the palm of the hand as I had to hold the compression and discharge of the shell of an unbolted chamber. Ouch, the stock cracked and my ear hurt that was a loud blast... Was it a bad shell or a bad firing pin? I don't know, we had this thing happen before and the gun checked out ok... Either way that was the end of that gun...
Dapper was not fixed and on occassion the neighbor dogs would happen to catch her when she went into heat.
The last time that happened it was a neighbors Cocker Spaniel, the neighbor insisted that we give to them one of the puppies that were sired by the male... I felt so violated, first that my dog was caught by a neighbors dog that was allowed to tresspass into our yard and that this person actually thought they had a right to my dog's puppy... I kept one of the puppies for myself...
It was a very smart pup but my girlfriend had other ideas about Cocker's...
